Underpaint Academy – Stylized Painting Fundamentals with Thomas Mahon

Join Thomas Mahon for a five-week course in stylized painting fundamentals. This live class meets on Saturday mornings starting July 12th, 2025, and combines demonstrations, lectures, and hands-on feedback to teach you how to create stylized paintings with believable form and light, whether working from reference or from imagination. The curriculum progresses through portraiture and figure work, plants and nature, props and concepting, and natural landscapes, with an emphasis on silhouette, color, expressive brushwork, and lighting invention.

Class sessions run four to five hours each, and recordings are provided within 24 hours for those unable to attend live. Students can work in any digital or traditional medium, though instructor feedback is delivered digitally. The course welcomes all skill levels and offers two participation tiers: one with critique feedback on homework assignments and one for spectators who want to observe without submitting work. Lifetime access to recordings is available for spectators, making the content accessible after the live term concludes.
